And when politicians seem to feel free to change their views in the light of opinion polls for the sake of votes.

It is an old practice for Christians to modify their beliefs and practices to accommodate the views of their society. But it is not one that meets with any approval in the scriptures nor in the history of the church – at least until recent times.

One of the difficulties in the kind of modern debates is that the debate relates to people we know, members of our family or good friends. It seems hard to maintain strong moral views about abortion, gay relationships, even euthanasia when someone close to us is affected.  The atheist philosopher Peter Singer, who is on record approving euthanasia, the killing of new-borns etc, when his mother developed dementia did not organise euthanasia for her, but hired an expensive team of carers to support her in her final years.

But morality that has its origin in what God has said cannot so easily be adapted to our preferences without turning our backs on God.

Instead? Well it may be better for our friends and our society if Christians remained Christians and spoke up in line with what God has said.
